Medical professionalism in a changing society
 Prof. Yosuf Veriava, a stalwart in the Faculty of Health Sciences and former Academic Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, was recently awarded an honorary degree by Wits University, for his contributions to the institution over 30 years. He delivered this address after accepting the degree in December 2009. |

For the first time ever, studies in South Africa, Malawi and Mexico, published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrate a reduction in diarrhoeal disease deaths following rotavirus vaccine introduction in Mexico and vaccine efficacy amongst impoverished populations in South Africa and Malawi. 
The Wits Department of Journalism and the Graduate School of Journalism, Columbia University announce a new dual-degree programme, beginning in August 2010, which will allow students to study journalism in both New York and Johannesburg and receive degrees from both institutions. 
Professors Valerie Mizrahi and Keith Klugman held the Wits flag high recently when they were both awarded A-ratings by the National Research Foundation. These are researchers who are accepted by the international community as being amongst the leaders in their field.
