Wits professor wins prestigious AU scientific award
Wits Professor Diane Hildebrandt, Co-Director of the Centre of Material and Process Synthesis, (COMPS) in the School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering is one of two South African winners of the 2009 African Union Scientific Awards.

Rotavirus vaccine significantly reduces severe diarrhoea by 61.2 % in African infants
For the first time ever, studies in South Africa, Malawi and Mexico, published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrate a reduction in diarrhoeal disease deaths following rotavirus vaccine introduction in Mexico and vaccine efficacy amongst impoverished populations in South Africa and Malawi.

Wits Journalism establishes exchange programme with Columbia University
The Wits Department of Journalism and the Graduate School of Journalism, Columbia University announce a new dual-degree programme, beginning in August 2010, which will allow students to study journalism in both New York and Johannesburg and receive degrees from both institutions.

Professors Valerie Mizrahi and Keith Klugman held the Wits flag high recently when they were both awarded A-ratings by the National Research Foundation. These are researchers who are accepted by the international community as being amongst the leaders in their field.

Centre of Excellence on a quest to save millions of lives
Investigators at the Wits node of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Tuberculosis Research (CBTBR) under the directorship of Prof. Valerie Mizrahi have received international acclaim for their fundamental research in the metabolism of the organism to identify, characterise and validate new drug targets and vaccine candidates for TB.

Medical professionalism in a changing society
Prof. Yosuf Veriava, a stalwart in the Faculty of Health Sciences and former Academic Head of the Department of Internal Medicine, was recently awarded an honorary degree by Wits University, for his contributions to the institution over 30 years. He delivered this address after accepting the degree in December 2009.
